2-Year-Old Girl Shot In Head By Sibling During Apparent Accident: Police

A 2-year-old girl was reportedly accidentally shot in the head by one of her siblings Friday morning.

The Clayton Police Department confirmed it is investigating the shooting as accidental, ABC 11 reports. The shooting took place at around 11:00 a.m. on Smart Court, which is a side road off Georgetowne Roade near North O'Neil Street.

The 2-year-old was reportedly taken to the WakeMed emergency room, Clayton chief Blair Myhand confirmed to ABC 11. The child's condition was not released as of Friday afternoon.

"Any shooting is obviously very tragic, and of course one with a victim of this age really hits home with officers and EMS and fire folks here," Myhand said via ABC 11. "Most of us are parents, so we understand the realities of things and how fast things happen."

Police confirmed the weapon used was a semi-automatic handgun, ABC 11 reports. At least one ambulance, a firetruck and multiple police vehicles were at the scene at the time ABC 11 crews arrived.

The shooting occurred nine days after a 2-year-old boy died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Fayetteville, ABC 11 reports. Fayetteville detectives were notified about the child's death last Saturday and are continuing to investigate the shooting.
